This specification covers the requirements for primer/basecoat/clearcoat aftermarket repair systems used for GM dealer warranty work. These two (2) component (2K) systems shall be ambient temperature (minimum 20 °C (68 °F)) cured or forced cured at ≤82 °C (180 °F). These repair technologies are designed to repair original equipment manufacturer (OEM) basecoat/clearcoat (BC/CC) systems, but are of different formulations and/or chemistries than typical OEM products. This specification also includes repair to plastic components like thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) fascia parts.
Symbols. Not applicable.
Applicability.
This specification applies to all exterior paint repair systems for use on vehicles and painted parts.
Remarks.
The primer, basecoat and clearcoat are 2K materials of varying chemistries. The 2K materials are typically higher in volatile organic compounds (VOC) than OEM systems and must comply with local, state, and federal emission regulations.
Primers, basecoats, and clearcoats approved to this specification are a system and not interchangeable. Only the specified metal pretreatment wipes (e.g., Henkel Bonderite 1455 wipes, per the Henkel technical data sheet recommendations), anticorrosion primer, primer-surfacer, and BC/CC systems tested and approved to this specification can be used for GM warranty work as an aftermarket repair. Pigments used in these materials must exhibit the same durability properties as those used on OEM paint materials
