This standard defines a protocol with built-in security and lossless data compression options for efficient transport of streaming power system data over Internet Protocol (IP) communication systems. It specifies data and control methods and uses a publish-subscribe architecture for controlled signal-level data access. This standard incorporates open source material hosted on the IEEE SA Open Source platform.
Purpose
The purpose for this standard is to provide a streaming data protocol meeting the specific requirements of power systems, which include reliability, security, scalability, bandwidth management, and flexible configuration. Existing protocols do not address all of these requirements. This protocol is intended to supplement or replace existing protocols used for synchrophasor data.
Abstract
New IEEE Standard - Active.Streaming Telemetry Transport Protocol (STTP) is defined in this standard. This protocol was initially designed for streaming power system data over Internet protocol (IP) communication systems. It is focused on streaming real-time measurements but can be used with any type of continuously flowing data. It features built-in security and lossless data compression options for efficient transport. It specifies data types and transport control methods using a publish-subscribe architecture for controlled signal-level data access. It uses standard security and transport options, so it is easy to maintain and update. It is highly configurable for time precision, compression level, and packet sizes to optimize the stream within data and transport limitations. It has been proven and refined in several demonstration projects and production environments. Open Source Files are available at https://opensource.ieee.org/sttp/sttp/
